Schools Results - 4 March 2013
It's autumn in South Africa – the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness and of schools rugby. And so we already have results.
The days of a rugby season from April to September are now, it seems, well gone. Rugby starts the previous October and by March schools are already in powerful activity.
Poor old cricket!
Sarel Cilliers of Glencoe have already played three matches. Not that the start has been smooth. The first game, against Volksrust, was stopped early because the ambulance refused to work overtime and pushed off, and the second game, against Harrismith, was stopped early because the score was too high.
Kingsway, too, have played three matches – in the Gelofte Night Series.
The big rugby day this past weekend was at Hoërskool Fichardtpark in Bloemfontein, which is why there are so many results in the Free State. Grey's massive win sends out a warning message to all schools.
Last year Noord-Kaap beat Hentie Cilliers of Virginia 30-28. It was exciting this year again but Noord-Kaap's four tries were too good – scored by flanks Luaan Dowie and Nico Graaff, flyhalf Henry van Zyl and lock Lehan Muller who is the captain of the team. Outside centre Dimitrio Tieties, who was their outstanding goal-kicker last year, converted two of the tries.
The Griquas match between Duineveld and Diamantveld was played in Kimberley.
The Cape clearly starts later but then carries on longest, certainly well into August.
As in the last several years, we get great benefit from the results sent to us by kind readers. We again depend on such kindness. Send missing results to paul@sportsmedia365.com.
