West and East in Cape Draw
Ray Connellan, the founder of the week, wanted it to be an opportunity for Eastern Cape Schools to meet Western Cape Schools. On the first day of the tournament, the result was a draw, as Eastern Cape won two matches, Western Cape won two matches and one was drawn.
Probably the most noted victory on the first day was that of SACS over Selborne. Selborne have 11 players in the Border side chosen for Craven Week. They were excused the trial match up at Loftus Versfeld and played at Cape Schools. Neither of the SACS players played. One of them is their captain and the captain of the Western Province team, Lucky Dlepu. (Craven Week starts on 17 July 2017.)
Five of the schools are ranked on the Schools Top 20. Grey PE beat Boland Landbou in the closest victory of the day, SACS beat Selborne and Dale drew with Rondebosch.
Four of the five matches were desperately close.
The second (and last) day of the tournament is on Monday, 3 July 2017.
Cape Town is unusually cold at present but still without the rain that the people long for.
