Cape Town 7s: Blitzboks safely through

South Africa came from behind to beat the United States and remain unbeaten in Pool A, while Australia kept themselves in the hunt by adding more misery onto Russia's shoulders by keeping them scoreless for a second consecutive game.

In Pool D, Scotland and Wales booked their spots in the Cup quarterfinals with their second victories over Samoa and Uganda, respectively. Their match will decide who tops the pool.

Pool C saw Canada claim a dramatic 19-19 draw with New Zealand to keep themselves in the hunt for a Cup quarterfinal spot while England's second victory – thanks to a late score to beat Argentina – saw them add their name into the Cup quarterfinal list.

France made light work of Japan in their must-win Pool B encounter, while Fiji – who claimed a Cup quarterfinal spot – were pushed all the way by Kenya.

Pool D

Scotland 38-7 Uganda

Things were a little bit easier for Scotland in their second match as they used their experience to overcome a determined Ugandan outfit. This victory ensured that they grabbed a Cup quarterfinal spot while Uganda will now need to avoid the Pool's wooden spoon.

Wales 17-0 Samoa

It was a tough battle in the opening seven minutes as neither side were able to break the deadlock. However, Wales managed to edge their noses ahead in the final minute of the half to head into the break with a 5-0 lead.

Wales pressed home that advantage in the second half to run in a further two tries to advance to the Cup quarterfinals.

Pool C

New Zealand 19-19 Canada

New Zealand opened the scoring with a converted try in the second minute and managed to double their lead two minutes later. However, they were reduced to six men in the final minute of the half and Canada took full advantage as they cut the deficit in half on the stroke of half-time.

Canada dominated possession in the opening stages of the second half and managed to reduce the deficit to just two points with their second try of the match. However, New Zealand restored their seven-point advantage soon after but Canada bagged a converted try in the final seconds to level matters.

England 19-14 Argentina

England stamped their early authority on the match with a converted try but Argentina were level after four minutes when England conceded a penalty try and were reduced to six men in the process.

England edged their noses ahead with an early second half unconverted try but Argentina edged ahead with a converted try to take the lead for the first time with two minutes to go. However, England grabbed a late converted try to seal the match.

Pool B

France 50-7 Japan

It took France two minutes to open the scoring with a converted try and that caused the floodgates to open as they managed to run in a further four tries to take a commanding 33-0 lead at the break.

Japan claimed the opening points of the second half but France finished stronger as they bagged a further three tries to claim the comfortable victory.

Fiji 28-22 Kenya

Fiji got the scoreboard ticking from the kick-off and managed to control proceedings with a further two scores. Kenya managed to get themselves on the board with a minute to go in the half to keep themselves in touching distance.

Kenya grabbed an unconverted try early in the second half but a Fiji converted try with four minutes remaining ended the match as a contest. Kenya grabbed two tries in the closing minutes but ran out of time to grab a late winner.

Pool A

Australia 36-0 Russia

Australia began strongly and claimed two tries inside the first three minutes. They continued to press home their advantage by adding a further try in the final two minutes of the half to hold a commanding lead at the break.

There was no stopping the Wallabies in the second half as they quickly added a further three tries before taking their foot off the gas and coasting to victory.

South Africa 28-10 USA

The Unites States applied all the early pressure and were rewarded for their efforts with a fourth-minute try but the Blitzboks got their noses ahead from the kick-off when Cecil Afrika benefitted from a Seabelo Senatla hack through to grab a converted score. The Blitzboks then pushed their lead to seven points when Werner Kok touched down in the final minute of the half.

Senatla grabbed South Africa's third converted try in the opening minute of the second half before the match went into a bit of a lull. The USA managed to get a second try with two minutes remaining but Kok bagged his second try in the final seconds to seal the match.
