Jean to captain BaaBaas

Springbok skipper Jean de Villiers will captain the Barbarians in Saturday’s clash against Fiji at Twickenham.

In the unique tradition of the club, national rivalries have been put to one side with South African centre De Villiers given the honour of leading a Barbarians side coached by All Black mentor Steve Hansen.

De Villiers enjoyed a stellar season in the Springbok midfield and led the South Africans to 10 wins in 12 matches. As a result, coach Heyneke Meyer, following the 19-10 win over France in Paris at the weekend, said he plans to retain De Villiers as captain next year.

The Barbarians on Monday also confirmed that Springbok lock Flip van der Merwe will replace his international engine room colleague Eben Etzebeth, who has been ruled out of the match after sustaining an ankle injury against France.
