Stormers welcome new WPRFU era
NEWS: The Stormers have welcomed the outcome of the first Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) election since coming out of SA Rugby administration on Wednesday.
The Stormers stated on Friday that they looked forward to a new era under the elected president, Kevin Kiewitz, and his executive.
“All those at Stormers Rugby are looking forward to a new era for the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) following the election of a new executive committee earlier this week.
“The WPRFU is an important stakeholder in Stormers Rugby as the stewards of community rugby in the region and held their first election since coming out of SARU administration on Wednesday.
“Kevin Kiewitz was elected president, with Moneeb Levy the deputy president and Shamila Sulayman the vice president. All three have an excellent track record in local community rugby administration and are well-placed to take the WPRFU forward into a new era.
“The WPRFU will work closely with the leadership at Stormers Rugby in their capacity as a shareholder and continue to nurture the pipeline of talent in the region through the healthy school and club systems.”
The build-up to the elections was marred by various incidents – the most significant one being the troubles surrounding Zelt Marias.
The former WPRFU President, Marais, was nominated for four positions: President, Deputy President, Vice President, and Executive Committee member.
However, his hopes of involvement in the game were dashed when the South African Rugby Union confirmed that an independent Appeal Panel upheld a disciplinary sanction for misconduct.
He was suspended for 10 years from any positions in the SARU, or any other rugby body, and from any activities in the sport for breaching the SARU Code of Conduct.
