VIDEO: The glaring stat that's not 'bugging' Bok World Cup winner
SPOTLIGHT: It’s been close but no cigar for Andre Esterhuizen when it comes to crossing the tryline for the Boks.
After fronting the media this week, the 30-year-old centre is expected to feature in Rassie Erasmus’ team for Sunday’s clash against Scotland.
Esterhuizen can be an explosive ball runner with his power and size and that’s why it might be surprising that he hasn’t scored a try for the Boks in his 18 Tests.
The story continues below…
“I’ve been close a few times and there were a few people that didn’t pass to me, and they scored themselves, so it’s true that I haven’t scored a try for the Boks,” he said.
When asked if it bugs him, he added: “No, back in the day for the Sharks it also took a while before I scored my first try.
“I still remember my mate Stephan Lewies was next to me during a game and there was an open tryline. We both hadn’t scored a try, so I decided to dummy and take a 50-50 chance.
“Luckily this guy missed a tackle on me and then I scored.
“He [Lewies] was very angry at me and after that, the tries started coming.
“It took me 20 to 30 games to get my first Sharks try.”
The Springboks will name their team to face Scotland on Friday.
