Referees' strike gets yellow card

Suspended pending…

The strike of the Border referees, agreed amongst referees on Thursday for this weekend, has been suspended pending talks with the Scottish Rugby Union.

The referees – there are 36 in the Border Referees' Society apart from assessors, coaches and touch judges – voted at a meeting in Melrose on Thursday to withdraw their services because of the SRU's unilateral decision to dispense with the post of Referees' Development Officer for the Border region.

On Friday there was an emergency meeting between the SRU and Border Referees' Society representatives  at which it was resolved that strike action would be suspended and a further meeting would take [place on Monday 10 October to discuss what alternatives can be put in place to retain the RDO's post for the Borders.
