Match reports

Monnas won the Beeld Trophy for the 1st XVs of Big Schools, but there were other winners – Medium Schools, Small Schools, Under-16, Under-15 and Under-14 on the gigantic Saturday last week.

Medium Schools

The Ratels of Overkruin won the Middle Schools title when they beat determined Frikkie Meyer of Thabazimbi 13-10 in Pretoria.

Like Monnas, the Ratels were winning the Beeld Trophy for the first time.

It was a match Ovies were expected to win but they mete determined resistance from the Frikkies.

For Overkruin a try just before half-time and another just afterwards gave them comfort but immediately after the second try the Frikkies hit back with a try of their own.

Both sides' goalkicking was poor.

Small Schools

In Parys, where the finals for Small Schools were played, Parys looked firmly in the saddle against the titleholders Vryburg when they led 17-5 at half-time but the Groen Bulle came back strongly to draw this thriller of a match.

Parys had first use of the wind and flyhalf Gerhard Meyer controlled the match.. They attacked with verve through centres Harry van Rensburg and Werner Olivier and fullback Martiens McCloen.

In the first half Werner Olivier and hooker Edwin Wiggins scored tries for Parys, both converted by Olivier who also kicked a penalty goal. Just before the break Jannes Brits on the right wing scored a try for Vryburg.

Then it was Vryburg's turn to have the advantage of the wind and their pack got stuck in. Jan Rose got a try and Jannes Brits a second. Wessel Pienaar kicked a conversion and the score was 17-17 with ten minutes to play. Vryburg had chances to win the match but it was not to be and the trophy was shared.

Under-16

Big Schools

Waterkloof and Kemptonpark shared the trophy with a 12-all draw. That they were that close Kemptonpark had to thank its defence and the kicking foot of flyhalf Dillon Laubscher who kicked four penalty goals.

Cornel Mostert scored a try in the second half which Marnus Schoeman converted. With little time left fullback Thabo Motau earned his side a draw with a brilliant try in the corner.

Medium Schools

It was easy for Hoërskool Klerksdorp who beat Ben Vorster of Tzaneen 31-5 after leading 19-5 at half-time.

Small Schools

Warmbad of Limpopo led 3-0 into the second half, scored the only try through Hannes Grobler and ended beating Lydenburg 11-3.

Under-15

Big Schools

Affies got going in the second half and after trailing 9-8 at the break dominated the second half and beat HTS Middelburg 30-9 in Pretoria, scoring four tries to nil.

Medium Schools

For Overkruin it was a day doubly crowned with glory as their Under-15 team emulated their first team by winning the Beeld Trophy. They victory was more comfortable, beating Linden of Johannesburg 19-8.

Small Schools

Schweizer-Reneke's Schalk Payne scored both his side's tries as they beat Louis Trichardt 15-3 in Parys.

Under-14

Big Schools

Affies dominated the first part of the match but the Klofies fought back. Down 13-0 at half-time, Waterkloof won 15-13. After a penalty goal had given Klofies the lead they had to defend for all they were worth as Affies charged in on the attack.

Medium Schools

Hoërskool Rob Ferreira of the Lowveld beat Hoërskool Middelburg 25-7.

Small Schools

Vryburg were never in danger of losing as they rushed over Warmbad and led 24-0 at the break, eventually winning 29-5
