DHS in good home win

Match report

The DHS 1st XV had their second domestic game against Richardsbay on Saturday the 6 May. It was game where DHS had everything to lose and Richardsbay could have taken away the DHS good record so far.

DHS stood strong against the Richardsbay early onslaught, weathered the storm and answered the Richards onslaught with a great try by Msizi Buthelezi. He outpaced the Richardsbay coverdefence, and dived over in the corner. Ryan Mattthysen converted the try from the corner in a blustering wind.

Dillon Jones who is playing very good rugby at the moment scored DHS’s second try after some good phase play by DHS. He picked the ball up from the base and with no blindside defence sprinted 20 metres and dived over in the corner, for another try converted by Ryan Matthysen.

After some good attacking play by DHS, Winston Cameron-Dow dived over under the poles for a well deserved try, as he had worked hard the first half. Ryan Matthesyn again converted to take the score to 21-0.

Soon before the half-time break, Msizi Buthelezi finished another good backline move to score under the posts for another try converted by Ryan Matthesyn.

With a comfortable 28-0 lead the DHS team had to go into the second half against a blustering wind.  It was hard going and they kept to their structure to score another two tries. The first by Winston Cameron-Dow was from a loose kick that was fielded by Wessel Potgieter. He had a strong run down the touchline, the ball was passed infield and after good interplay by the forwards Cameron-Dow dived over in the far corner. Ryan Matthysen was unsuccessful with the conversion, to take the score to 33-0.

A rare lapse in concentration on defence gave Richardsbay their first try, which was unconverted, to take the score to 33-5.

After a loose kick by Richardsbay, a good counter attack that saw PJ Stroebel sprint 50 metres and sidestep the cross coverdefence to score under the posts. Ryan Matthesyn was successful with the conversion to take the score to 40-5.

On the whole DHS was full value for their victory, and deserved the win. It was game that could have got loose, but DHS stuck to their structure and reaped the reward with a resounding win over Richardsbay. Full credit to the whole team as it was great team effort to seal the victory.
