FNB Top 20 - June 22

Westville race in

Many schools are not playing at present as the term winds down and Craven Week hovers. It's hard to give a team that has not played preference over a team that has played well.

For this reason we have made changes at the top.

Paarl Gim now move up to the top after two big wins over the touring Presentation Brothers' College of Cork in Ireland and over SACS.

Grey High also played two matches, beating the interesting Dale side on Wednesday and then the strong St Andrew's side on Saturday.

Those two have moved ahead of the other unbeaten top side, Grey College who have not played for a while.

Positions 4 to 8 are extremely difficult. Affies, Marais Viljoen and Monnas had huge wins. Paul Roos beat Boland Landbou, who drop more placed than is usual because of the congestion in those places.

Of the next group Kearsney had a huge win while EG Jansen sis not have it all their own way against Kemptonpark and the Rooibulle of HTS Middelburg did not play.

It is also difficult to separate the schools from 12 to 17. Waterkloof, Glenwood and Dale lost to teams not even on the Top 20, but Paarl Boys ' High and Outeniqua did not play. Selborne's result against Cambridge was not that impressive.

As a result Westville come in and come in high after their victories in successive weeks over Kearsney and Maritzburg College. They have played College only since 1987 but have never before beaten them. In addition they have beaten DHS and St Charles. Only Selborne and Hilton have beaten them, and that early in the year.

While Waterkloof, beaten by HTS John Vorster, Glenwood, beaten in Natal for the first time when Michaelhouse beat them, and dale, beaten by Grey (PE) slip down, Westville come marching in.

The FNB Top 20 for 22 June is:

1. Paarl Gim
2. Grey High
3. Grey College
4. Affies
5. Marais Viljoen
6. Monument
7. Paul Roos
8. Boland Landbou
9. EG Jansen
10. Kearsney
11. HTS Middelburg
12. Westville
13. Waterkloof

16. Outeniqua
17. Selborne
18. Dale
19. Hoërskool Kroonstad (Blouskool)
20. Pietersburg, Noord-Kaap

Michaelhouse, so erratic, could well be back in the Top 20 soon as could Bishops after two generous wins. Hilton, too, are close. And HTS John Vorster has jerked people into taking notice.
