Jameson Jones – Bergrivier captain

Player Profile

Bergrivier face off against local rivals Weltevrede in the Wellington derby on Saturday afternoon. The match is a FNB Classic Clash and Jameson Jones captains Bergrivier from the eighth-man position.

Jameson Jones was born in Wellington on 27 November 1988. He attended Wellington Primary School where he grew up playing flank. He moved to Bergrivier in Grade 8 and is currently in Grade 12.   Next year Jameson hopes to study management and further his rugby at Stellenbosch University. Jameson is playing in his first full year in the Bergrivier 1st XV having been on the bench for inter-schools last year.

Jameson had a particularly interesting Grade 11 year, which started with him accepting a rugby bursary at Pinetown Boys' in Durban. At the end of the first term he was offered another bursary, this time by Paarl Gim. A chance to return to the Cape and be closer to his family was impossible to resist. Having played for the Pinetown 1st XV and been lured to Gim on a rugby bursary, Jameson felt it was a bit of slap in the face when he was asked to start out in the lowest Under-19 team at Gim. With inter-school approaching Bergrivier sensed Jameson’s unease at Gim and enticed him back home with the promise of place in the inter-school squad.

Jameson loves to attack and play with the ball in hand. He has natural speed and like his hero Richie McCaw he tries to be present at every loose ball. Bergrivier are having a good season and have only lost one game thus far. Their biggest win of the season was against Charlston Hill but their best performance to date according to Jameson was their win against Schoonspruit of Malmesbury.

Jameson is happy that his team can adapt to any situation that unfolds on Saturday. He says that his forwards and backs are of equal strength and they will mix things up as the situation requires.

The game is played at a neutral venue and going on results to date Bergrivier must be favourites. Despite the fact that the favourites lost last year, Jameson is undaunted and looking forward to the honour of leading out his team on Saturday.
