New Orleans win FNB again - just

Match Report

In their FNB Classic Clash with Klein Nederburg New Orleans won again but just 7-5.

In fact to was a match which Klein Nederburg could well have won. Their bigger pack of forwards dominated the line-outs and scrums and mauled well, but the New Orleans side clung on tenaciously and in the end it was their defence which won the match.

There was a crowd of some 10 000 people at the Faure Street game as the local clubs shifted their fixtures in support of this great schoolboy match. The support was enthusiastic with much singing and cheering.

for the first 20 minutes or so Klein Nederburg threw everything they had at the New Orleans side and it seemed that they simply had to break the defence. But the defence held. Klein Nederburg had a comfortable penalty kick at goal but opted for a line-out and maul instead, Still the defence held. They dropped at goal twice, and still could not score. In the end this was costly as the match was won on a kick.

The only score in the first half was by New Orleans as they wrestled their way back into the game. A [penalty gave them a five-metre line-out. They drove at the line. The ball came out from scrumhalf to flyhalf. Curtly Davids played to his loose forwards. Again they won the ball and went blind for captain Harschall Collins to burst over about ten metres from the posts. Davids converted. 7-0. That was the half-time score.

When New Orleans lost a ;player to the sin bin, Klein Nederburg went on a magnificent pick-'n-drive that marched some 50 metres or so down the field  for a try by left wing Justin van Schoor.

In the dying seconds of the match Klein Nederburg had a penalty on the New Orleans 22. Kick it out and the match was over as there was no time for the line-out. Instead they kicked at goal, what could have been the winning kick, but it went astray and New Orleans had gained an improbable victory. That was their fourth derby victory in succession.
