Ryan Mouton - Captain of Bergrivier

Player Profile

Bergrivier play Weltevrede in the big Wellington derby on Saturday, an FNB Classic Clash which will be broadcast on national television. Ryan Mouton captains Bergrivier.

Ask Ryan who will win and he has no doubt. "We will." he says with a dismissive laugh.

According to coach Mervyn Pietersen, who has been at the school for 19 years, Ryan is the team's star – as a player and as a captain. He is the best ball-carrier in the team with excellent handling skills. He combines well with his two flanks Charlton Solomons and Elrich Pietersen (no relation to the coach). Ryan's hero is Joe van Niekerk. That is how he would like to play his rugby.

This is Ryan's second year in the 1st XV, his first year as captain, but he has been playing rugby since he was a nine-year-old at Hillcrest Primary School. He has always been a loose forward.

Enjoy being captain? "Yes. It's a great honour to captain your school's team. Everybody in the school looks up to you and there is 100% support from the team."

The school's principal, Lucas Slinger, says that Ryan is immensely popular at the school, especially amongst the girls.

The team is a balanced team, in Ryan's view, preferring an expansive game.

Ryan's biggest supporter is his mother, he is a member of the student council and his schoolwork is going well. He finishes school this year and hopes to go to Stellenbosch to continue his studies, preferably in physical education.

Ryan Mouton was born in Paarl on 23 July 1986.
