Zweliyandila win FNB Classic

Match report

We report on the FNB Classic Clash between Zweliyandila of Chalumna Village and Ntsonkotha of Newlands Township.

Zweliyandila the hard-fought, close FNB Classic Clash against Ntsonkotha on Saturday afternoon at NU 1 Ground in Mdantsane, the big township on the fringes of East London.

The weather conditions were excellent and a big crowd of some 7 000 spectators came for the match, a good contingent from each of the schools.

Both coaches, Mtobeli Kweleti of Zweliyandila and Daniel Lemfuko of Ntsonkotha, stressed how hard the match was. Kweleti said of the tense time of the match: "I was in an ICU!"

Zweliyandila led 6-0 at half-time after two dropped goals by flyhalf Monde Nono.

In the second half Zweliyandila scored the only try of the match. From a scrum five metres from the Ntsonkotha goal-line, the scrumhalf and captain, Zwelenkosi Ben, skipped his flyhalf and passed straight to Lukhanyiso Booi, who in turn fed Mkauleli Rhala who sent Sibusiso Hoya over in the corner.

After that Ntsonkotha attacked strongly and Zweliyandila were penalised several time son their goal-line. Ntsonkotha opted to go for tries rather than for posts but Zweliyandila held out bravely.
