Stuart Vickers - Selborne' returning captain

Back from injury

Stuart Vickers has had a frustrating season – as has his side at that great rugby school, Selborne College of East London .This time he hopes to make it onto the field for the FNB Classic Clash in East London on Saturday.

Stuart played fullback for Border at the 2003 Craven Week and moved to centre this season. He was down to captain Selborne against Grey in Port Elizabeth in April but was forced out through injury. Lock Luke Martins captained the side in his stead.

Getting back has been a long process and meant missing Craven Week and the trip to Cape Town for the SACS 175 celebrations.

The season started well enough till Grey College of Bloemfontein beat Selborne 54-6. In the season as a whole the side has lost eight out of 19 matches, including a rare defeat at the hands of Hudson Park.

But, while there is the sadness of disappointment, there is also the realisation that things could easily have been a whole lot better. Five of the defeats were by a very few points, including the Grey High who won the first encounter 18-16 and have gone on to enjoy a brilliant season.

Stuart says that his team is certainly keen for this match. They know that they can win it.

Stuart, who was born on 6 February 1986, has been playing rugby since Grade 1 (Sub A).

He is not the only family member to have captained his school. His father was the Queen's College 1st XV hooker and captain in 1963.

Stuart is a school prefect. His talents extend into summer where he represents the Grey's first cricket side as a first-change bowler but he acknowledges that batting is definitely not his strength.

This will be a great test for the talented utility back.
