Klofies knock Monnas out of Beeld

Match Reports

The Beeld Trophy for big Schools is building to a climax and will crown a new winner this hear after Waterkloof knocked out Monument.

Hans van Vreden of Beeld reports that the semi-finals will be Klofies, Affies, Hoërskool Rustenburg and Hoërskool Middelburg.

Waterkloof beat the reigning champions Monument 17-8.
Affies beat Pietersburg 22-9
Rustenburg beat Jeugland 13-8.
Hoërskool Middelburg beat Brits 14-7 after extra time.

Johan Korff of Beeld reports that it was a tough, hard match, worthy in fact of a final rather than a quarter-final. In the biting cold Waterkloof were able to reverse last year's defat (30-17) at the hands of Monnas in the final.

Klofies made better use of the conditions in the first half and led 14-3 at the break as both packs got stuck in.

Prop Corné Fourie scored Waterkloof's only try while SA Schools centre Stefan Watermeyer weighed in with four penalty goals.

Monnas had some great attacking opportunities – one just before half-time and twice in the second half, three occasions in which they should have scored but didn't. In addition goal-kicker Justin Botha had a rare off day.  Wing Damien Jansen van Rensburg  scored Monument's try and Botha added a penalty goal.

Affies had a tough time against stubborn Pietersburg. It took them to late in the first half before fullback Gerhard van den Heever scored their first try. Then he got a second jut before the break. This made the score 10-6 at half-time after Gerrie Roos had kicked two [penalty goals for Pietersburg.

Affies took over kin the second half when top prop Frik Kirsten stormed over for a try.

The success for Hoërskool Middelburg is rare and achieved the hard way. Brits dominated possession and territory. In the first half the Middelburg side had two chances to score and took them. Un there second half Brits had even more possession and even more territorial advantage plus a strong breeze but the match ended level when wing Lesego More scored the equalising try. Even in extra time Brits looked the more likely to win till eighthman Kevin Lancaster latched onto a dropped pass and scored under the posts. Danie Gerber's son converted and Hoërskool Middelburg are off to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Hoërskool Middelburg will play Klofies in Middelburg

Jeugland lost at home to Rustenburg, as they conceded many penalties at the tackle/ruck. Rustenburg dominated up front and put pressure on the home side. Playing with the cold wind in the first half Elardus Derwig and Johan Erasmus,  the Rustenburg halves, dictated play behind that generous pack.

With the wind in the second half a try by Paul Erasmus brought the score to 10-8 but the conversion was missed as was a later penalty close to the posts.

Rustenburg play Affies in Pretoria in the semi-final on Saturday
