Premiership Rugby is the top division of English rugby. The tournament is contested on an annual basis and it’s widely regarded as one of the finest professional leagues in the northern hemisphere, alongside the Top 14 and the United Rugby Championship.

Officially known as the Gallagher Premiership Rugby for sponsorship purposes, what many fans know as English Premiership Rugby was founded in 1987, when it was known as the ‘Courage League’. This early league followed an unusual format whereby clubs organised their own fixtures. In total, the Courage Leagues featured approximately 1,000 clubs split into 108 competitions.

English Premiership Rugby Teams

Since then, the Premiership has undergone numerous changes. Today, this competition consists of England’s 10 best-performing rugby teams, each competing to win the country’s most prized piece of silverware.

The modern format utilises a promotion and relegation system with the second division, the RFU Championship. Additionally, Premiership teams battle to qualify for Europe’s club competitions: the European Rugby Champions Cup and the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

Although the teams vary each year, there is one that stands out above the rest: Leicester Tigers. They are the most successful side in English Premiership Rugby history, with 11 titles. They are followed by Bath, Wasps and Saracens, who have claimed six titles each.
