Solly's Edinburgh raising the bar

Edinburgh boss Alan Solomons said his team is now within sight of securing a place in Europe's Premier competition.

Edinburgh won the 1872 Cup for the first time for six years after a 20-8 victory over Glasgow Warriors at Murrayfield on Friday.

Two tries from wing Tim Visser helped the capital side secure a first victory over their Scottish counterparts since 2010.

Solomons praised his side's collective effort, whilst stressing the importance of edging closer to sixth place in the League and European Champions Cup qualification.

"Right at the beginning of the season we spoke about the importance of the team ethic and spirit," said Solomons.

"We've got a tough task ahead of us. We've always said that our aim is to make the top six [in the Pro12].

"We've got a massive game next, Connacht are playing really well, unbeaten at the Sportsground, so it's a massive, massive game for us.

"But to get the win and to get the four points from our home game was important, but I think the significance of this game is something that shouldn't be lost," Solomons added.

Solly's Edinburgh raising the barWarriors boss Gregor Townsend said he was very disappointed with the performance and result and acknowledged that they must work hard this week ahead of the visit of the Scarlets this coming Friday.

"I'm really disappointed for our supporters, who travelled in huge numbers and they deserved a much better performance than that," Townsend said.

"We've done really well in this fixture over the last few years and to not retain the title is disappointing.

"We played with more energy in the second-half, but maybe we scored the points too early because after that we didn't play with the same zip.

"All credit to Edinburgh, I thought they played well over both games, but especially this game and they took their chances really well in the first-half. They fully deserved to win the game and the 1872 Cup.

"[This coming] Friday's game is our last league game for a while and we have an opportunity to put things right after this defeat.

"Scarlets have already beaten us this season and they played very well.

"They play with a lot of heart and are a tough defensive team and we've got a bit of work to do, the coaches and players, to make sure we put in a performance at home that is much more like us."
